Remarks: The Victoria County History was begun in 1899 and was dedicated to Queen Victoria. The publication of about three new volumes each year is creating an encyclopaedic history of the counties, based on original research and ranging from earliest times to the present. It is an indispensable source for students of English society. Some counties are complete and a set of volumes is planned for others, including both general and topographical chapters.
